Located just north of Baileys Harbor on Highway 57, and as in-the-middle-of-nowhere as you are likely to get in Door County, the AC Tap is about as real as it gets, but in a good way.
Equipped with a pool table, darts, and jukebox, the Tap, as it is known to the locals, is a typical Wisconsin tavern, with one exception. It has a bean bag toss game, made of plywood and coffee cans, that has been around since the original owners, Art and Carl, owned it way back when. It's a challenge to get a game off on a Saturday night, what with everyone passing from the bar to the pool table, but that's part of the fun-you can banter back and forth a little as you stop someone in his tracks as he sees you are about to throw.
The present owners have turned what was kind of a dingy, dark bar, into a good place to get a cheap meal and a beer. On Fridays, they even have a perch or jumbo shrimp basket for $8.95, and they are good-sized portions. The menu is pretty big for such a small kitchen and has sandwiches, salads, and pizza, too. And in the summer, you might enjoy being outside on the patio with a cold "brewski" from the bar's large selection of tap and bottled beers.
The kitchen is open when the establishment is open for business. After ten o'clock at night, if you are starving, you are not likely to find much to eat in northern Door County, so keep the Tap in mind if you are heading out to a show or concert in the area.
On Wednesdays and Saturdays, you're likely to find live entertainment, much of which is local, with a few regional acts in the mix. During the high tourism months of June through August, you can be sure the place will be packed from ten to midnight and later, as it is not only a local watering hole, it is the "after-party" place to go for many of Door County's summer residents.
In the winter, if you snowmobile, the Tap is a great stop for warming up. Sports fans will also be elated to find large format TV's around the place to keep up on their favorite teams.
The AC Tap is one of those "don't judge a book by its cover" sort of places. Make a stop and be pleasantly surprised.
