Are you going to JJ's or La Puerta? Well, both! A long time ago there used to be a wall separating the two establishments, but now it is one big, festive restaurant.
The place to go in Northern Door County if you are craving Mexican food, JJ's - La Puerta has the most addictive salsa on earth. If you order Mexican for lunch or dinner, the chips and salsa are complimentary, and bottomless. Paired with their fantastic Margaritas or your favorite beer, you simply could make it an evening!
If you're not into Mexican, there is a very large menu to chose from, and includes all of the usual suspects: burgers, steaks, fish, salads, all of which are consistently good, and served in nice-sized portions.
The burger selection alone makes it tough to decide what to order. Many of them are named after members of JJ's family, and might have unusual ingredients such as blue cheese or olives on them. Order up the AMojo@ fries to go along with your burger, and you are in heaven! Thursdays are ACrabby Thursdays@ and you can get a great deal on a pile of succulent crab legs with drawn butter for dinner. Fish specials abound on Fridays, and often include lake perch.
Located at the north end of Sister Bay, the atmosphere is casual, with lots of eccentric items on the walls to make for lively dinner conversation. Quite often you'll see JJ himself milling around talking to the locals; you can't miss him because he's an unusually tall, blond Scandinavian-looking guy.
If your kids finish dinner early, they can go sit at the bar along side a dummy dressed in Mexican clothes, and look at a tank full of freshwater fish. If the fish haven't been fed yet, you can bet one of the friendly waitresses will offer to let one of the kids feed them. If you have really little ones, you might do well to sit in the dining room to the right of the bar, as some of the exotic masks on the wall in the dining room to the left of the bar might scare them out of their minds! Don't be shy about asking the waitress to take the masks awayB it happens all of the time!
At the height of the summer season, the place is just jammed for dinner, so plan on getting in early if you don't enjoy waiting. Otherwise, since the restaurant is on the water, grab a beverage from the bar, mill around on the sidewalk, or enjoy the sunset over the bay until your table is ready. In the off-season, it is generally easy to get a table at any time.
